“Hyung” (형) is a Korean word that means “older brother” or “older male.”
However, it’s only used by a younger male when referring to an older male.
In everyday life, boys and men use this term to refer to their biological older brother, an older cousin, or a close older male friend.
What Does “Hyung” Mean in K-pop?
In idol groups, younger male members call older male members “hyung” to show both respect and affection.
The word doesn’t just reflect hierarchy—it also signals closeness.
At first meetings, it’s not always easy to casually call someone “hyung” right away, depending on the person’s personality and the situation.
You might hear it used playfully, like “Hyung, buy me food!”, or sincerely, like “Thanks, hyung.”
3 Common “Hyung” Types in K-pop
Let’s break down the common “hyung” types you often see in K-pop groups—totally based on my own opinions (feel free to disagree!).
The Reliable Leader-Type Hyung
(Example: RM from BTS, Bang Chan from Stray Kids)
This type keeps the group grounded and acts as a mental anchor.
Calm under pressure, they’re often like the “dad” of the team—quietly leading and watching over everyone.
RM, for example, always stays composed during English interviews and represents BTS with maturity.
Bang Chan once supported I.N on stage when he looked like he might faint—classic dependable hyung moment.
The Maknae-Like Hyung
(Example: Baekhyun from EXO, Heechul from Super Junior)
Also known as “fake maknae,” this hyung is older in age but acts like the younger sibling.
Baekhyun is full of aegyo and often gets teased by the younger members—but he’s incredibly talented and reliable behind the scenes.
Heechul is super unpredictable and marches to his own beat. He may act like the chaotic maknae in variety shows, but he’s actually one of the group’s long-standing pillars.

This hyung is more chaotic than the maknae!

BTS: RM (Namjoon)
