What’s the Difference Between a K-Pop Concert and a Fan Meeting?

If you’re into K-pop, at some point you probably start thinking, “Maybe I should go to Korea and see my favorite idol in person!”

But once you look into Korean events, you’ll notice there are usually two different types: concerts and fan meetings (also called “fan meetings” or “penmi” by fans).

When I was new to K-pop, I was honestly confused about the difference too. I even made the mistake of joining a fan meeting while expecting a concert experience. (To be fair, fan meetings are fun too!)

So today, for K-pop beginners who are just as confused as I was, I want to explain the difference between K-pop concerts and fan meetings.

I Thought They Were Basically the Same (But They Weren’t)

I’m Japanese, and in Japan we don’t really have many events called “fan meetings.”
Most idol events are simply concerts.

In Korea, however, K-pop idols often hold fan meetings in addition to concerts.

After attending both concerts and fan meetings myself, my honest impression is that they are similar in some ways.
You go to a venue, watch your favorite idols sing, dance, and talk on stage, and enjoy the atmosphere with other fans.

The biggest difference is this:

  • Concerts focus more on performances like singing and dancing
  • Fan meetings focus more on talking and interacting with fans

Also, fan meetings are often exclusive events for official fan club members.

What Happens at a K-Pop Concert?

A K-pop concert usually looks like this.

So what can you expect at a K-pop concert?

At concerts, you usually enjoy things like:

  • Performance-focused stages (songs, dancing, special effects)
  • Watching the members closely with binoculars
  • Fan chants and cheering together
  • Standing for long periods at standing venues
  • Casual fans or non-fans attending too

Concerts are mainly about enjoying the music and performances.

They are also often held in larger venues than fan meetings, so people sometimes attend even if they are not hardcore fans yet. Some people go simply because they are curious about the group.

If you’re completely new to K-pop events, I personally recommend starting with a concert first.

What Happens at a Fan Meeting?

A fan meeting is usually more like this.

So then, what happens at a fan meeting?

Fan meetings are usually more focused on interaction and communication with fans.

Typical fan meeting activities include:

  • A lot more talking segments (members often sit and chat on stage)
  • Fun games and special corner events
  • A closer feeling between the members and fans
  • Seated audiences rather than standing crowds
  • Smaller venues and fan club-only entry in many cases
  • Events that are usually held in Korea rather than overseas

Of course, idols still sing at fan meetings too.
But compared to concerts, the songs are often calmer ballads rather than high-energy performance tracks.

Because many fan meetings are aimed at dedicated fans, there are also lots of inside jokes and references long-time fans understand.

Another thing to consider is the language barrier.

Since fan meetings focus heavily on talking and games, it can be difficult if you don’t understand Korean.

When I attended my first fan meeting, I struggled a lot because I couldn’t fully understand what the members were saying. Everyone around me was laughing, and I was just sitting there wondering what happened.

You can absolutely still enjoy a fan meeting without speaking Korean, but honestly, I think it becomes 100 times more fun if you understand at least some Korean.

What Should You Bring to Each Event?

Are the things you should bring different for concerts and fan meetings?

I wondered about this too before attending my first events, but honestly, the basics are pretty similar.

Let me explain.

Concert Items

For concerts, I usually try to keep my bag as light as possible so I can focus on enjoying the performance comfortably.

Typical concert items include:

  • Light stick
  • Extra batteries and a portable charger
  • Tour towel or tour T-shirt

Fan Meeting Items

For fan meetings, my bag is usually a little different.

Because fan meetings gather more dedicated fans, people often trade photo cards with each other.

So I usually bring:

Which One Is Better for First-Time Fans?

People often ask me which event I recommend for someone attending their first K-pop live event.

My answer is definitely: a concert!

Here’s why:

  • You can enjoy it even if you don’t know every member or song
  • You don’t need to understand Korean very well
  • Singing and dancing are still the biggest charm of K-pop
  • Concerts are held overseas more often
  • Overall satisfaction tends to feel higher for beginners

Fan meetings are amazing if you already deeply love the group.

But if you’re only casually interested in a group, you might not enjoy a fan meeting quite as much.

(Of course, everyone experiences events differently!)

Anyway, I hope this article helped explain the difference between K-pop concerts and fan meetings for beginners.
