So, what is a “Fansign” (팬사)?
“팬사” is short for “fan sign event”
The Korean word 팬사 comes from 팬사인회 (paen-sainhoe), which literally means fan sign meeting.
It’s an official event where idols sign albums or merch for fans.
A lot of people confuse it with “fan service,” but nope—팬사 is specifically the signing event itself.
You can meet idols in person or online
Traditionally, fansigns were held face-to-face in Korea.
But these days, online video call fansigns (also called ontact fansigns) are super common.
Whether you’re sitting in front of your idol in real life or chatting through your phone screen—it’s still a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
How do you get into a fansign
It’s all about album purchases and a lottery
Fansigns usually happen when a group drops a new album or single.
You buy albums from a specific store, your name goes into a lottery, and if you’re lucky—you’re in!
Korea has “borders,” Japan is fully random
In Korea, many shops use a border system: buy enough albums and your spot is basically guaranteed.
In Japan, though, it’s completely random no matter how many albums you buy.
Some Korean stores also have international slots, but they’re super limited.
That usually means international fans have to spend more to secure a win.
Rules vary, so research is key
Every group and shop has their own system—how to apply, how many winners, deadlines, etc.
Check the official store pages and social media carefully.
You might see fans sharing tips online, but most people invest a lot of money gathering info, so don’t expect others to just hand it over.
Also, asking “how much did you spend to get in?” (aka the border) is kind of bad manners in the fandom.
Warning: don’t overspend!
The desire to meet your bias makes people go wild with album buys.
For popular groups, fans regularly spend thousands of dollars. Some even drop over $10,000.
You’ll see these stories all over social media, but remember: don’t hurt your wallet or lifestyle just for a fansign.
Tips if you want to join
In-person means traveling to Korea, online is easier
If you want a face-to-face fansign, you’ll need to be in Korea. The catch? You don’t find out if you’ve won until right before the event.
So some fans fly over without a guaranteed ticket… only to end up not getting in. Painful, right?
That’s why for beginners, online video call fansigns are a safer bet—you can join from anywhere in the world.
You’ll need to travel to Seoul, since most fansign events are held in the city.
Many international fans plan their trip around the album release schedule.

- Find cheap flights to Seoul on Skyscanner
- Book hotels in Seoul on Booking.com
- Explore K-POP tours and activities on Klook
Staying in areas like Myeongdong or Hongdae is convenient for both the fansign venues and sightseeing.
Plan what you’ll say to your idol
The highlight of a fansign is talking to your idol for a few seconds or minutes.
But a lot of fans freeze up and go blank because of nerves!
Write down a short script or key phrases in advance so you don’t waste your time.
If it’s an offline event, small gifts are usually okay too.
Don’t get too discouraged if you lose
Fansigns are insanely competitive. Even if you buy a ton of albums, you might not get picked.
I’ve personally bought dozens and still didn’t make it—I couldn’t function the rest of the day 😅.
But hey, there’s always next time. Don’t give up!
