The Korean Word “언니 (Unnie)”

“Unnie” (언니) is a Korean word that younger females use to refer to older females—whether it’s a biological sister, a close friend, or even a female celebrity they admire.

It reflects the Korean cultural emphasis on age and respect.
Importantly, “unnie” is only used by women.
If a man is talking to an older woman, he would say “noona” instead.

How Is “Unnie” Used in K-pop?

In the K-pop world, female idols often call older members “unnie” as a sign of closeness, respect, or affection.
Female fans might also refer to their favorite older female idols as “unnie,” especially when they feel a kind of sisterly bond with them.

Examples you might hear include:

  • 언니, 너무 멋있어요! (Eonni, neomu meosisseoyo!) – “Unnie, you’re so cool!”
  • 고마워요, 언니! (Gomawoyo, eonni!) – “Thank you, unnie!”
  • 언니, 셀카 찍어요! (Eonni, selka jjigeoyo!) – “Unnie, let’s take a selfie!”

Unnie vs. Noona: Why Gender and Age Matter Most

When using friendly terms like “Unnie” in Korea, one small mistake can turn a compliment into an insult.
That’s why two things are absolutely crucial: Gender and Age.

1) Gender Rules

First, only females can use the word “Unnie.”

If you are a male fan, you should never call a female idol or even a close Korean female friend “Unnie” — no matter how close you are.
In that case, the correct term to use is “Noona.”

2) Age Rules

Second, it is natural for a younger female to call an older female “Unnie.”
However, it is considered rude and awkward for an older female to call a younger female “Unnie.”

In Korean culture, age is taken very seriously.
People generally love being seen as youthful and can feel offended or uncomfortable if they are perceived as older than they actually are.
(This is a common cultural trait across East Asia, including Korea, China, and Japan.)

A Classic Mistake: The Jaejoong & Chaeryeong Episode

To see how tricky this can be, let’s look at a funny but awkward real-life moment involving Jaejoong and ITZY’s Chaeryeong.

During a conversation, Jaejoong said:

“You should ask Yuna-unnie for skincare clinic recommendations.”

The problem?
Yuna is ITZY’s maknae (youngest member).
That means Chaeryeong is actually older than Yuna.

By calling the younger member “Unnie,” Jaejoong unintentionally implied that Yuna looked older than Chaeryeong.

He immediately panicked when he realized his mistake!
This perfectly shows how sensitive the “Unnie” label can be —calling a younger person “Unnie” can accidentally suggest they look older than they actually are, which is a big social no-no in Korea.

Famous “Unnie” Idols in K-POP – The Women We All Admire

Taeyeon (Girls’ Generation)

When it comes to legendary K-POP girl groups, Girls’ Generation (SNSD) is a classic.
And among the members, Taeyeon is definitely one of the most loved.

She’s super active as a solo artist and often performs at SMTOWN concerts, where all SM artists come together.

Since Taeyeon debuted in the 2nd generation, she’s older than most current SM idols.
That’s why younger idols from groups like aespa, Hearts2Hearts, and Red Velvet naturally call her “Unnie.”

Fun fact:

Taeyeon is also part of the project group GOT the beat, where she performs with juniors from Red Velvet and aespa.
You can actually hear them calling her “Unnie” there — and honestly, their stages are fire. Go check them out!

Jisoo (BLACKPINK)

When talking about K-pop legends, you can’t leave out BLACKPINK. Within the group, Jisoo is the oldest member (the eldest “Unnie”). The other members—Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa—always refer to her as “Unnie” with deep affection and trust.

There is a famous story that shows Jisoo’s strong personality and her role as a protective unnie.
Even when her agency pressured her to lose weight, she stood her ground and said, I like my body the way it is! and refused to go on a strict diet.

In the K-pop industry, being told to lose weight by an agency can be incredibly stressful—some idols even cry because of the pressure.
In such a tough environment, imagine how reassuring it must have been for the other members to see Jisoo, their oldest unnie, confidently declare, “I’m going to eat what I want!”

Her mental strength and self-love provide a huge sense of security for the whole group.

Jisoo’s solo!

While the BLACKPINK members have been focusing a lot on their solo activities lately, I personally absolutely love Jisoo’s solo tracks! If you haven’t heard them yet, I highly recommend giving them a listen to see her “cool yet nurturing” unnie side in action.

Jihyo (TWICE)

TWICE has nine members, so there’s a lot of energy in the group.
But if we’re talking about the ultimate “Unnie” figure, it has to be Jihyo, their leader.

She’s always looking out for the members and really helped TWICE grow into the massive group they are today.

Also, Jihyo is super popular in Korea — and not just for her talent.
Her strong, healthy body is something a lot of people admire.

While most idols are super slim, Jihyo stands out with her toned figure,
and both male and female fans absolutely love it.

She works out regularly, and you can see her routine in her vlogs.
Seriously, check them out — major motivation!

Soyeon ((G)I-DLE)

Soyeon is the leader and main producer of (G)I-DLE.
In terms of age, she’s actually in the middle of the group.

However, because of her incredible talent and strong leadership, she’s widely seen as a respected “Unnie” — not only within her own group, but also among idols from other groups.

(G)I-DLE has a powerful survival story led by Soyeon.

Despite her top-tier skills, she was once eliminated from the audition program PRODUCE 101, where she was told she didn’t have the “right visuals.”
Even after debuting with (G)I-DLE, the group struggled due to a lack of opportunities and failed to gain much attention at first.

That’s when Soyeon decided to take matters into her own hands and became the group’s executive producer.

At one point, with no activities scheduled, the foreign members had even returned to their home countries.
But Soyeon called them back to Korea and told them:

“This is our last chance.”

She later released the album I NEVER DIE with the mindset that
if this didn’t work, the group would disband.

And the result?

As everyone knows, it was a massive success.
The title track “TOMBOY” became a mega-hit, followed by a string of chart-toppers like “Nxde” and “QUEENCARD.”

Today, they are a legendary group.
Soyeon proved that an “Unnie” isn’t just someone who is older—it’s someone who has the courage to lead everyone to victory.

Solar (MAMAMOO)

As a personal favorite, I have to introduce Solar from MAMAMOO.
She is a bit unique and might break your typical image of a serious, mature “Unnie.”

In MAMAMOO, it’s often Solar, the oldest, who is the most restless and chaotic!

There are many hilarious moments where the younger members just stand back and watch her quirky behavior with a “here she goes again” look on their faces.

Most shocking (and famous) stories

One of her most shocking (and famous) stories is when she ate strawberries without removing the stems.

When the other members looked at her in pure shock, she simply replied,
“It’s fine, it’ll just come out when I poop.”

This raw and unfiltered personality is exactly why fans love her.

You can watch Solar eating whole strawberries — stems and all — in this video!

However, don’t let her quirks fool you—her talent is world-class.
In a group as vocally powerful as MAMAMOO, she leads with her incredible singing ability and stunning visuals.

Interestingly, MAMAMOO is famous for having a fan base that is overwhelmingly female.
This is proof that many women admire her strong, independent, and authentic way of living.
Solar redefines what it means to be an “Unnie” by showing that you can be a top-tier professional while staying true to your weird, wonderful self.

English Phrases You Might Hear About Unnies

  • She’s such an unnie vibe.
→ Someone who feels like a protective or relatable big sister.
  • Unnie line supremacy!
→ When the older members are especially powerful, beautiful, or in charge.
  • Unnie, adopt me 😭
→ A fan jokingly wishing to be part of their favorite idol’s life.

Final Thoughts: Who’s Your Favorite Unnie?

Whether she’s nurturing, powerful, or charmingly unpredictable, every K-pop group needs a strong “unnie” figure.
If you’re a female fan, calling your favorite idol “unnie” is a sweet way to show admiration.
For male fans, though, the word you’d use is “noona”—but that’s a topic we already covered 😉
